Dictionary Entry

These are the elements in a dictionary entry. 
Entry: the word you are looking up in the dictionary.

Syllable Breaks: dots dividing in syllables the entry.
  • bi-as
Pronunciation: phonetic symbols between slashes or parentheses
  • bi-as /baI'as/
Stress Marks: in the pronunciation part, a mark that indicates what syllable has the stress.

Parts of Speech: indication of the parts of speech of the word.

Definition: The possible definitions or translations of the word. Be careful with the context of the word you are looking up. 

Inflections: after the definition you may find inflected forms of the verb. 
  • interesting and interested are inflected forms of the word interest
Etymology: It usually refers to the origin and history of the word.
